Mary Esther Hedley Van Akin, Alpha Mu—University of Wisconsin, 1922, served Alpha Delta Pi as a national officer for nearly four decades.
A two-time traveling consultant, Mrs. Van Akin served as Province President for 14 years before joining Grand Council is Grand First Vice President and then Grand Vice President of Collegiate Chapters. She helped start the Dandy Lions group for past national and international officers.
Mrs. Van Akin touched the lives of countless sisters in her time serving Alpha Delta Pi. She also made some great memories along the way, like during the 1955 Convention where she and Convention Chairman Dorothy Lee rode in to the Old Timers’ Dinner on a bicycle built for two.
Those who knew her describe her in one simple word: Loyalty. It is because of her loyalty and dedication that the Mary Esther Hedley Van Akin Leadership Development Fund was named in her honor.
Mrs. Van Akin passed away in 1993 but her legacy lives on.
